Most owners discover within a week that the cord supplied with an electric car is a stopgap. Topping up from an ordinary outlet can take the better part of two nights, and a Level 2 charger turns that into a few quiet hours while you sleep.
Our visit is mostly about arithmetic. We note every substantial appliance in the house, read the rating of your service and work out what can be set aside for the car. That figure decides the circuit, and the circuit decides most of the price.
Plenty of Eastside homes have room to spare. Some are better served by a load-managed setup that eases off when the oven and dryer are running, and a few truly need more capacity. Whichever applies, the reasoning is written into your quote.
What Shapes the Price
Charger installations vary more than people expect. These are the things that move the number.
Distance from the panel
- A garage that shares a wall with the panel needs a short run; a detached garage or a far driveway needs more cable and often a trench or attic route.
Spare capacity
- If the house already uses most of its service, a load-managed circuit or, occasionally, a panel upgrade enters the picture.
Circuit size
- A 60 amp circuit for a fast wall unit costs more in wire and breaker than a 40 amp circuit for a modest one.
Hardwired or plug-in
- A wall connector wired straight in avoids a receptacle; a plug-in charger needs a heavy-duty outlet rated for continuous use.
Concealed or surface wiring
- Running cable inside finished walls takes longer than tidy conduit along a garage wall.
Outdoor mounting
- Exterior chargers call for weather-rated boxes, fittings and sometimes a post.
Permit fee
- Charged by your city and shown on its own line, never hidden in the total.
